Brassica oleracea L. convar. capitata (L.).

Mid-season and mid-late varieties.
Sowing seeds of mid-season varieties for seedlings begins on April 20-25, mid-late varieties are sown from April 15. The seedlings by the time of planting (i.e. by the beginning of June in the Non-Black Earth region, for example) should be 30-35 days old, therefore the timing of seed sowing is adjusted depending on the region, weather conditions and, accordingly, the timing of planting in the ground.
Sowing is carried out under a temporary film cover on the beds (if the spring is warm) or in a cold film greenhouse. Seeds are sown according to a 5x5 cm pattern. Shoots when sowing dry seeds appear on the 3rd-6th day. If necessary, on the 12th-14th day, the seedlings are thinned out.
If few seedlings are needed, they can be grown in pots, cups or other suitable containers. In this case, seeds are sown 3-4 pieces in pots with a soil mixture consisting of equal parts of sod land and humus with the addition of sand or peat (or sawdust). Two weeks after germination, the strongest plants among the seedlings are left one in each pot, the rest are removed.
The soil under the seedlings is not overmoistened to avoid "blackleg" disease and downy mildew. When the second true leaf appears, the first feeding is carried out with a solution of ammonium nitrate - 3-4 g per 1 liter. 5 liters of solution is enough for 1 sq. m. 3-4 days before planting, the plants are fed a second time with a mixture of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium fertilizers in a ratio of 1:2:1, 40-60 g of the mixture per 1 sq. m.
Before planting, the soil on the beds intended for cabbage is shallowly dug over to loosen it and remove weeds. The roots of the seedlings are dipped in a clay "mash" for better survival. Cabbage is planted according to a 60 x 35-40 cm pattern.
We remind you that properly grown seedlings should have 5-6 true (non-cotyledonous) leaves and a height of 20-25 cm before planting. When determining the quality of seedlings, their height is considered from the root collar to the end of the folded leaves.

Did you know that ... heads of cabbage for fermentation are cleared of top leaves, large heads are cut in half, part of the cabbage is shredded. The heads are placed in rows in a prepared container, sprinkled with salt and compacted with shredded cabbage. You can also ferment whole heads without shredded cabbage. In this case, the heads are packed tightly in rows, covered with green leaves on top and filled with a 4% salt brine (960 ml of water and 40 g of salt). The brine must cover the wooden circle under the weight. When fermenting, you can add dill seeds and shredded carrots.
